Assuming he already gets a regular snack and filling meals and has no other medical condition, I'd add hard boiled eggs or unsalted nuts like almonds. Please don't give extra portions of junk just because he's asking for it - it'll make his life more difficult in the long run.
If he's not feeling full for some reason, make sure he's getting enough water (get him a thermos) or consult a nutritionist to make sure something isn't up.

I decorated my kids fruits at that age eg draw car symbols on the tangerines. Smileys and names on bananas. How much I love them on the bag with apples etc. They loved it and looked forward to it. Would something like that make the fruit more 'accepted'?

I cut fruit for my son, and pack it in a disposable container. Looks like the kind you buy when you splurge on cut-up fruit.
He said his friends were jealous. I was shocked.
Try sending cut-up fruit. You may be surprised.
