I just bought a second-hand fridge and it seems to me that it's colder than it should be. Are the fridge shelves meant to feel very cold?

Does food placed in the back of the fridge freeze? Usually, the sign of a too-cold fridge is fruit that is mushy because it was frozen.

You should be able to adjust the temperature.

I haven't seen anything freezing, but I put ground meat in the fridge before going to bed and it is still rock solid. It didn't defrost at all in the fridge yet.

The shelves should be cold, but the question is how cold. I'd think a warmer fridge would be more of a concern in second hand fridges.

I don't think that "feel very cold" is a useful measurement. What feels very cold to me might feel different to you. Buy a cheap refrigerator thermometer and adjust the temperature dial so the thermometer reads below 40F.
