Can someone enlighten me: I have a distaste for books with hopeless plots and bitter characters. Is To Kill a Mockingbird that sort of book, or is it a happier sort of book? |
Mockingbird is poignant.

Not every book by Margaret Peterson Haddix is 100% clean, but IMO, they are all good reads. (The parts that are not good can be censored out if you want your kids to read it.)

True that some of Haddix's books dabble in violence or romance. Some of the Among the Hidden books get that way.
About Mockingbird: my personal vote is that yes it is poignant but it made me feel very uncomfortable to read as a teenager. I might like it better now. You can probably read a plot summary on wikipedia or something to get a sense of it.
And I don't recommend The Help if you're looking for a clean read...same idea.
