My one year old never liked formula. Now that he's a year, my doctor said to switch to milk and he needs to drink 16 oz of it. I've been trying to give it the last few days and he just won't have it. He eats solids, he loves water but he just doesn't like milk. I asked if I can give toddler formula instead, which he takes a little nicer than regular milk, and the doctor said no, just milk.

what am I supposed to do if my baby just doesn't like it? I can't force him to drink. I've tried in a bottle, sippy cup, with a straw.... so now he's not even drinking water because he thinks every time I'm pushing the milk.

any tips or advice?

Can you do half milk, half formula and wean onto that slowly?

Or give him cereal with milk to get him used to it?

Your pediatrician sounds a little extreme. Give toddler formula together with milk to wean slowly.

your doctor isn't an authority on pediatric nutrition.

That's a good idea. I can definitely try that. He won't drink even close to 16 oz of milk or formula a day but at least it will be more than the 2 oz he's getting now.

One of my children was like that.
My dr said I should try different forms of milk like heated, chocolate milk... if she still won't take it then as long as she eats other dairy products it's fine. I could not get her to drink milk then and she still doesn't at almost 5 years old.

He doesn’t need any milk. There are many other (and better) sources of good fat and calcium.

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, that sounds ridiculous to me. Toddler formula should be preferable to milk.

At wits end At wits end At wits end Some doctors really do not get enough training in nutrition.

Ohhh chocolate milk is another great idea. I prefer to not give sugar but if it’s the only way.... and you all are making me feel so much better. Thank you!

try to mix almond butter into his solids, it is a very good source of calcium.
That's what I did with my children

Your doctor does sound a bit extreme. I also believe if your toddler eats other dairy foods he/she is fine. There are actually plenty of studies that claim having too much dairy isn't good for you...

Unless there is some aspect we don't know about, I can't fathom a reason that a toddler would be obligated to drink 16 ounces a day of anything but water. OP, you may want to get a second opinion.

Yogurt was a big favorite for us. No milk until much later, and only when poured over cereal. Yogurt is a great source of protein and calcium and has all these great live cultures that are supposed to be great for your gut biome.

I can't think of any good reason why a child MUST drink milk, to the extent of adding sugar to it (!!) to convince said child to do so.

There are plenty of healthy foods, children with dairy allergies do just fine. I do NOT recommend giving chocolate milk just to say that your child had milk! Milk is NOT medicine.

Don’t. Then you will have to wean the chocolate milk. Toddler milk is even better than cow’s milk—it’s made for toddlers not baby cows. I used it for a DC that wasn’t a milk fan and still isn’t as a teen.
