My oldest is three years old.
I don't have many books at home. I hardly read to him and I want to change this.
I'd love to invest in a couple of books to read to him. Any suggestions for age appropriate educational reading material?

At that age any books are educational. Keep them short and fun.
There are the Bob books for pre reading, but any books you read her will help with language development. Go to a bookstore or library and have fun.

Are there any places you can get second hand books near you-yard sales or thrift shops? I go to these and just browse for what looks interesting-look for things around his interests-does he like cars, animals, trains or dinosaurs etc
I like getting second hand books as then I don't care if they get spoilt, or never read much-I get several books for the price of one new book. You can get a few different books, see what he seems to like and then look for different books either by the same author or on the same theme-
it should be books you don't mind reading to your child bc if they do like it, they will want it read over and over
Equally try your local library and explore different books-a good librarian should be able to offer some suggestions that most children like. They might also have a story time that he would enjoy...
(I'm in the UK so specific books I would suggest, you probably don't have)
