OTOH, I'm not recommending the DR these days. |
What’s wrong with the DR?

Lots of tourists have been mysteriously dying and getting extremely ill in the DR; please stay far away!!
Also, if a passport is the only thing keeping you from the destination of your choice, you should know that there are services that can renew them as quickly as overnight (for a fee).

Cancun is amazing. Do you have any points you can use for travel?

Get a nice private villa (even better with a pool) and just enjoy that and a quiet spot on the beach. You can definitely do watersports - jetski, snorkel, horseback riding in the ocean (!!), but no need. DH and I did this many years ago and it was amazing! | .
Just be aware that the end of August is getting into hurricane season in the carribean. You can still go (and I have) but it’s a little riskier that time of year. An option is the islands like Aruba, Barbados, which are below the hurricane belt. Have so much fun!

There's been a spate of tourist deaths there. Unexplained.

It sounds to me like some of the resorts are watering down their drinks with something toxic, but obviously, I don't know.
Or it could be a big coincidence, as the resorts claim.
In any case, I could not, in good conscience, recommend anyone going there until this is all solved.
