Why is this better than holding the cheapest jump rope handles and pretending theres a rope?

Make sure your rope is a right length.

B I N G O !!!! Youre right! According to the below, I should be using a 9' Jump Rope (that seems very long, but I'll try). Im using a 7' kids Jump Rope. What a "genius" I am that I couldnt figure that out.
Height Chart
While the way you jump can affect the rope length needed, in general you can follow a basic chart to determine the correct jump rope length for your height. Someone less than 4 feet 10 inches tall uses a 7-foot jump rope. If you are over that height, but under 5 feet 3 inches, use an 8-foot rope. A 9-foot rope fits someone 5 feet 4 inches tall to 5 feet 10 inches tall. If you are between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 6 inches, a 10-foot rope should work. You will need an 11-foot rope if you are taller than 6 feet 6 inches.

RX Sizing Recommendation:
Beginner to Intermediate (0-50 Double Unders) Height Plus 3 feet . Example: 6 foot height plus 3 feet = 9 foot rope length

There's a weighted ball that makes the momentum of the arm movement go more smoothly. I don't use this and I'm not recommending any specific brand but I tried it at a friend who swears by it and I was surprised that it did feel just like real jump rope.

Stand in the center hold the handles out- the rope should reach you just under your arms.
I found that the very thin speed ropes are not good.

Looks good. When you jump, do you have control? Is the movement smooth?
Go to youtube and download jumprope exercises to your library.

Its hard to judge.
Right now Ive been tripping over the rope all the time because Im 5' 5" and should be jumping with a 8' 5" rope, but mine is a typical childrens rope and its 7'.

Yes. When ropes are too long or too short you can’t jump properly. Once you get your rope adjust it and you will see the difference.

Take a good solid piece of clothesline--cotton, NOT nylon, which is too light--, stand on it and pull it up to your armpits, add enough to wrap the free ends around each hand once or twice, and there you have the right length. Tie a knot in each end to prevent unraveling.
