Hi,
So apparently burning regular candles releases unhealthy things into the air.
You can get healthy regular (non-shabbos) candles online.
My question is, do you know of any healthy SHABBOS candles I can purchase?
Thanks!

my great grandma lit MANY candles every day for every rabbi, grandparent and lost soul. she lived a healthy life till 98. we used to joke that the reason she had a long healthy life was the smoke she inhaled as she prayed over those candles.

Use tea lights. They fit fine on the candle holder parts of a candelabra or candle sticks.

Two things to be problematic in candles.

1. This is obvious. Overpowering perfume smells. Ewwww.

2. Not many people know that a lot of candles have LEAD in the wick, to make the wick stand up and burn down evenly. Melted lead fumes in your house is a bad, BAD thing to do, especially for kids and pregnant women.

Beeswax candles with pure cotton wicks are the safest, but they are not cheap. Paraffin candles (like in tea lights) are pretty safe, again if they wicks are nothing but cotton.

Look into using the glass cups with oil. That is probably the best route, as long as they are somewhere that kids cannot knock them over. There should be no tablecloth or runner under the candles that a child could pull on, bringing down the who thing on top of his head.

You put a layer of water in the glass cups before the oil, so that when the oil burns down it will stop at the water, and safely put itself out. You can even use food coloring to match your decor or themes. I know people who do that, and it's very festive.

All young children get checked for lead levels, at least in the US. There doesn’t seem to be a particularly high incidence of elevated lead levels in Frum kids, not even those from large families (with lots of candles), so I’m not so convinced.

Yes, candles emit pollution. There is no such thing as a soot-free candle (avoiding soot depends on having the right fuel-to-wick ratio, so if it isn't Shabbat, trim your wicks), but some types of fuel give off fewer toxins than others. Lead wicks are rare nowadays. I haven't noticed any alternative traditional Shabbat candles, but you can use other types.

Switch to glass cups with olive oil or beeswax or soy candles. Recently the quality of the regular "shabbos candles" have gone down and if you have a sensitive nose or set of lungs you can feel the air pollution from them.

I wouldn’t be worried for the 1.5 hours they are lit... it’s not like you have 50 candles burning 24/7

Personally I use olive oil with wicks but not because I think candles are “unhealthy “.

It sounds like a (health) nutty shabbos party.

Beeswax actually purifies the air and smells great too! You can find tealights and tapers.
