Adding a plug for the Zoey and Sassafras series. I'm not sure if it fits, because there are magical creatures in the book, but not in a dangerous way. The girls uses science experiments to help heal magical creatures that come to her for help.
I love it because there is *none* of the usual drama that is often unnecessarily injected into children's books. No fights with friends, no defying parents... Her mom helps her figure things out when she doesn't know what to do (e.g. she helps her grow samples of bacteria in petri dishes, taken from a cut on a unicorn's leg), and it's very wholesome and innocent, in a creative and authentic way.
