They might not have the skill set you are looking for - but its within reason to ask.
In my community many of the ladies who come to peoples homes to help with simchas do fruit platters, set-up, serving and clean-up.

I recently hired waiters for a bar mitzvah I made. They were happy to do what I needed just needed the right tools and time and directions.
Examples:
Set the table
Plated food using tools and ingredients I gave them (appetizer, dessert)
Made salads - cut vegetables
Made nice serving platters with garnishes (deli, liver, kugels...)
Cleared the table
I gave them very detailed instructions and they were happy to follow them 80% and the rest they did what they wanted. In the end nicer then I hoped.
