Hi there! I have a decent size stack-able right off my kitchen and I love it. I love not having to bend down to put things in and out. I don't have a front loader (would love one at some point-just went with a cheaper, more simple option and it works just fine). I'd definitely go with a stack-able in a convenient location vs a front loader in the basement.
Side Note: I do have experience with front loaders in the basement from mom's house, would still stick to my choice.

Make sure you can reach the buttons & all the way inside the top machine, if you are short like me!

Most stackables are just regular washer and dryers that come with a stacking kit. As long as you're not getting a prestacked W/D they will be regular size and you will have the option to change it to side by side.
