When a weak student goes to learn in EY does this go into the college average? DS is a weak student in Hebrew subjects, but he is a strong secular student with a nice SAT score and plans to attend a competitive graduate school. Is he ruining his chances to get into a good graduate school?

His credits from yeshiva will may go in as empty credit if he's going to transfer them to a different college. However, grad schools will still ask to see transcripts from all institutions granting credit, and that could hurt him.

Can we just leave out this year? The boys are calling it a gap year anyway. I told him I wouldn't pay for him to travel and bum around. He needs to be productive. Maybe the grad schools are used to this gap year concept.

Where is he going in Israel? Most yeshiva programs just grant pass/fail credits that don't factor into the GPA. If he's going to a university, he might get grades.
By the way, traveling around Israel can be a wonderful educational experience. You know your son, but if he's a responsible kid, do encourage him to see the country.

In general, transfer credits do not go into the GPA, whether from an Israeli yeshiva or simply a different college.

If you go to Israel as part of Touro or YU's joint Israel programs, the grades transfer in as grades. If you don't and transfer them in, it's pass/fail blank credit. You can do this even if you to to YU or Touro. You can also send to a yeshiva that values and grades for effort, growth and ameilus, not mastery; it sounds like that would be better for him anyway.

He's going to Jerusalem. I will encourage him to tour around.
