I thought it was obvious.
1) Shabbos Nachamu follows the 3 weeks/9 days when people specifically don't travel for pleasure, so now that it's over people can finally travel for pleasure
2) It is the end of the summer, after camp ends, and before school starts so people consider it a perfect opportunity to do something together as a family before the school year starts up again.
What is to be baffled about?

Where I live it’s de rigueur to go away for shabbos nachmu. We are in a very financially tight spot this yr and can’t afford even a Shabbos away. My children have already complained that EVERYONE will be away and why only we can’t go.
I will even have to apologize to family/friends as to why I’m staying put.
