If you want to teach them about chesed, go to FUN IN JERUSALEM's Volunteer section. My personal favorite is packing food at Ohr Meir u Bracha for 400 families affected by terror attacks. Packing is on Thursday mornings at 9:15 to 10:15 in Arzei Habira (off Shmuel HaNavi near Geula). Even the littlest ones like to put food in bags. No need to sign up in advance, just come! Closed though on Thursday August 22.
It's good work.

Ooh so glad I read this thread! Was wondering what to do with my small kids tomorrow and now I see that there's a great rail connection from the merkaz to the Biblical Zoo! That's us sorted for tomorrow (just need to think what to do for the rest of August....!!)
