The cabinets are melamine and a parchment yellow. The walls are painted the same parchment yellow. The counters are a darker yellow / brown, and I'm not sure what material it is. Certainly cheaper than even formica. There is also brown wood paneling on some parts of the wall. In order to paint the wall, but keep the melamine cabinets and wood paneling, because I have no budget for anything other than just painting, it obviously has to be a color that goes with yellow / bown. The problem is, I hate yellow / brown. I'm much more of a cool white / blue / gray person. Any advice on what color to paint this kitchen?

Can you recommend such a color? To the comment below about painting the cabinets, I think it's pretty hard to do that with this type of cabinet material.

Blue and yellow can go if you like that combo. Can you change the knobs?
If the paneling is unpainted, consider it a neutral.
See if you could get paint samples. There may be a blueish shade that would go. Otherwise beige would be the obvious choice.

You can cover the counters with something like this. Then paint the walls to match the new counter color. Yellow/Grey/White is a nice combo.

Yes, but no way to get around the cabinet color.
All good ideas (even the deep red!)

I just can't see gray and yellow going together.

Can I see a photo? From what I'm imagining a nice modern wallpaper that ties in can work well.

I can't picture exactly what you are saying, but I would say a blue that's not as dark as navy, but almost. And then you can have matching navy accessories like vases or coffee containers, or curtains if you have a window.

If the yellows are as pale as you describe, then a brilliant blue would look stunning in contrast.

I was thinking along similar lines like Rappel but I thought of a deep, rich turquoise, to get a sort of turquoise-gold (well, almost gold) contrast.

The problem with all these deep bold ideas, is that the kitchen is tiny. Did n't mention that I guess. So I need to keep it as light as possible.

How about painting the cabinets themselves? You remove the doors, paint the frame and doors separately then put them back on. For a small kitchen it's not a huge project.

I guess in that case, I'd recommend light silver gray for the walls. (Without seeing it, Idk if that fits but the idea would be making it like a "silver and gold" motive)

Take a cabinet door to a Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams paint store and find out whether they can be successfully painted.

Maybe you can cover the cabinets with contact paper and paint the walls to coordinate with that instead
