Quote: | From what I understand, Houston and/or Dallas have cheap real estate and a really warm, solid community. Ppl I know who grew up there love. Houston is a growing tech hot-spot, if your husband is in that line of work. |
We love Houston, but real estate has shot up over the past few years. Very hard to find a house under 200k anymore, and if you do it has max 3 bedrooms (and no basements here). Definitely would be considered a starter home, not something to grow into long term

Wow lots of South bend people here! How big is the community? What's there in terms of groceries etc vs going into Chicago? Are there style expectations like there are in some bigger cities?

Yay NE Philly or Rhawnhurst! We bought a four bedrooms single w finished basement and backyard for $240k. That was some time ago but there are still plenty of twin homes in your budget... This is a warm friendly place that is really growth-focused, not materialistic at all, which makes raising kiddos w their heads on straight a lot easier! Another plus is location -- super close to NY, Lakewood, Bmore, so u can still visit easily, pop in for a Simcha, etc. Hope u find the right plAce for you!

We ended up spending twice as much as planned and not going too far, settling in Edison, NJ because a great job offer appeared during COVID

Yes, real estate has shot up, but isn't there a first time homeowner program so you can put down a very low percent? So that $40,000 would be enough for a down payment?
