All hotel reservations booked on points can be canceled with no penalty, theres no deadline? Even same day?

Marriott person just told me hotels booked on points can be canceled anytime with no penalty.

Is it the same with all hotel reservations when using credit card points, or is Marriott unique?

Each hotel has an individual cancellation policy, which can be seen on the reservation, but it is generally 24-48 hours before check-in. Including with Marriott.

Edited to add: Never rely on reps, they’re clueless. If you will, make sure to get it in writing, so you can at least attempt to hold it against them in the future.

I have Hilton points and I know that their official policy is that each hotel can decide what their cutoff is as far as cancellation.
I have personally cancelled at two different hotels just hours before I was supposed to arrive with no penalty, but I do think the hotel is allowed to penalize if they want.

This is true. In fact, the penalty for cancellation is often greater than the price of the original reservation.

Do the above penalty situations all involve hotel reservations booked with credit card accumulated points, booked directly with the Hotel thats connected to your credit card?

As a general rule all points reservations have the same rules regardless of how the points were accumulated/earned.

Yes, the above applies to your situation.

The previous posters are correct. Just because you booked with points, you're still subject to cancellation policies, which can vary widely by property. Although some allow you to cancel up until the day of arrival, most require you to cancel between 24-72 hours beforehand, and some make you cancel 7-30+ days out. This will always be listed clearly in the reservation, so definitely read the fine print on each reservation.
