This Shabbos will be my first time making cholent, and I need a really good and flavorful recipe. I only need enough for a small crock pot, and something with no barley, please.

I do as follows:
Saute an onion in plenty of oil
Add garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, a generous squeeze of ketchup. Mix well. Add beans, potatoes, marrow bones and meat. Cover with water. Cook on high for 2/3 hours then turn down till shabbos.

Thank you! What kind of beans? How much? Do they need to be soaked? Can I use chickpeas?
Have you ever tried bbq sauce? I'm curious as to how it would turn out.

I use 1/2 pack navy beans and 1/2 a pack chulent mix. I soak them overnight. I wouldn't use chick peas for chalont.
BBQ sauce is a matter of taste. I wouldn't put too much.

BBQ sauce (or honey) gives a slightly burned taste after cooking for 24 hours. You're better off with a mixture of ketchup and brown sugar which gives you that BBQ flavor without the charred taste.
