Apparently dryer sheets ruin laundry so now I use the wool dryer balls from Walmart.

I try not to use any, only as needed.

I completely stopped using softener as it was literally eating my clothing and things were getting brown stains on them AFTER the cycles.
Now I just use detergent and nothing else and everything is fine.

How do you deal with the hard water, then? My towels could double as bludgeons when I don't use softener.

I use the dryer. I hang almost nothing. I love my dryer Smile
If I hung towels then I would use softner for that alone I guess. But from the dryer they dont come out hard.

I sometimes add vinegar to the load. That helps. But haven't used softener in over a decade!

Ah gotcha. I love the smell of sun on my clothes, but I guess I could ditch the softener in the winter. Thanks for the tip!
