I would like to get better at having empathy. I am realizing that I am more of a solution oriented kind of person. I’m having trouble with one of my teenagers and I think getting better at empathy would help. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Try to put yourself in someone else's shoes & validate before offering solutions.
Ask the other person questions how they feel.
For younger kids that can't express themselves, formulate their feelings into words

read faber and mazlish book -- validate their feelings -- then see what they say -- this allows them to process them and you to connect
validate and then listen
