United Healthcare covers all root canals until you turn 21 I believe. After that, they usually don't cover it. They see how many teeth you have left for chewing and if you don't have enough then they'll cover it but they count the teeth on both sides so you have to have lost quite a few in order for them to decide that you don't have enough for chewing.

They only pay to extract the tooth. If you want to save the tooth and do a root canal you have to pay for it. I remember this from when we first got married and dh needed a root canal while we had similar insurance so we paid out of pocket.

If you're 21 or older and have enough teeth for chewing (as determined by them) then yes, they will only pay to extract the tooth. If you're younger than 21, they cover everything. I know this because it was explained to me recently when my 21 year old was denied for a root canal while my 19 year old always gets approved. Unfortunately my 19 year old has had several root canals. Fortunately though, United Healthcare did pay for them - root canal, post & crown.
