I have a 5 and 6 year old boy and girl. They currently have summer shoes aside for sneakers and crocs/ natives. Now comes school and they are supposed to wear "school shoes." My first ' issue' (I know this isn't worth losing sleep over) is "why am I buying them new shoes when their old ones fit fine and it's still 85 degrees outside? My second question is "what are boys even wearing in school that is so different than the white soled loafers or lace ups my kids are wearing?
To be clear, I know what girls school shoes look like.
Now for my third and possibly biggest question/problem.
I am still trying to figure out how 'worth it' the Jewish store shoes are. They are more expensive and I am not confident that they would last my children a season. Until now, I have been buying them shoes from target/ walmart/ carters/ Kohls etc. ( I am not talking about newly walking kids. Those I got at the shoe store with a proper fitting.)
So....what do you have to say?

I think there’s something to starting the school year with new shoes.
It might depend what school your boys are in, but most of the boys I know wear sneakers. Which I don’t find cheaper than Jewish stores now that my son is older. If anything they’re more expensive.
ETA - just reread and see your son is young. I’m sure you can still get away with inexpensive sneakers.

Why not continue to buy at the shops you mentioned? If they fit well and work with the uniform/school rules then what is the problem?

the girls wear new school shoes. The boys generally still wear whatever their wearing from the summer.

I don't have boys so am not familiar with the boy scene. But the girls do tend to get new shoes for school. Most summers my DD's sneakers are barely fit to be looked at by the time the summer ends, so it's a non-issue, not even a question she needs new ones.
It so happens that this year I got a pair of white adidas for her (from nordstrom rack, at a great price) and one day she came home from a hike (she went to a very outdoorsy daycamp) and you cannot imagine what those sneakers looked like, like she had been in a swamp or something. I thought I would throw them out, but instead popped them into the washing machine. They came out looking like I had just bought them. I dried them on the deck, and they look amazing. I did this process one more time when same happened. I'm actually impressed.
So here I am with a pair of sneakers that fit, and look fine. But I still got her new school shoes, from Zaras actually. Not as expensive, and I figure they will last at least till she's in boots, and we'll see if her feet grow or if she gets more use of her sneakers next spring.

Op, I agree with you but learned the hard way.
When my daughter was in a playgroup I didn’t realize how important it was for her to go to school wearing new shoes. Her shoes were bought in the middle of the summer and still fit fine. The teacher had assumed that on the first day of school all the kids had new shoes since apparently they all usually do. So she said, “if you are wearing new shoes today stamp your feet”. My daughter was the only one who didn’t stamp her feet! It was at that moment that I noticed that all the kids were wearing brand new fall/winter shoes while my daughter was wearing a summer color, slightly worn shoe.
Interesting to note that a similar incident happened with my son on his first day of school. Teacher also made mention of the new shoes. Thankfully I had already learned to send kids in their brand new shoes (even if the old ones still fit...)

Strange.
School starts this week in Lakewood, and generally most little kids are still wearing summer clothing as it is warm outside, worn sandals and sneakers included.
Girls in uniform tend to show up with new shoes on the first day.
