I would recommend taking the guided car tour up. It’s cheaper and way more personalized. The railway takes about an hour each way, and it was slightly boring.

If you have the time and the stamina, hiking it is a great experience.

We walked up with our kids. Wouldn't recommend walking with a child younger than about 7, but with kids 7 and up it's a great thing to do. Then ride the train down.

We drove up (our own car) once and hiked up once. We're not the type to do the railroad, but those who do it usually seem to enjoy the experience.
