Dd 12 has long and very straight, thin hair.
She currently wears a simple long ponytail.
But she’s becoming increasingly unhappy with the look.
I agree that it doesn’t do much to her face.

She wants something updated but she or I are not very into styles.
We tried a hairstylist but we didn’t know what we wanted so she chopped dds hair a bit and let’s just say that didn’t end well.

Please help me with a new style for her!

Her face is on the thin side.

The haircut should be angled to frame her face and should have long layers. Layers add fullness. The shortest layer should begin at the bottom of her ears. However, if she gets a layer cut she may not be able to wear a ponytail.

Go with lots of layers, but you can make sure that the shortest layer still fits in her pony.
If she's ok with it you can cut some shorter angles that would frame her face .
You can make it a bit higher up and tug the pony a bit to give it more body and texture; and leave the top a bit messy - not perfectly flat.

Does a French braid add oomph to her hair & face?

How about a lob with lots of long layers, long enough to fit in a pony for school?

Girls that age in my area are either wearing their hair in ponies, a high bun or some type of braid. For those styles you need long hair and all cut in one layer.

I love straight hair in a sharp bob, but I don't know if it's in style now.
How about a braid or korn braid? Would she be happy wearing cute hair accessories in her pony?

My DD-12 has long straight very thin hair as well.
She puts her hair in a braid when it's wet every night before she goes to sleep and sleeps with it.
In the morning she takes out the braid and it's all 'puffed up' - she discovered this patent herself!

Another suggestion - Would bangs look nice? It's a risk as it takes months to grow it out, but she could try..

Thin face, and straight hair? I don't know if this would fly in your community, but it sounds like a pixie cut was made for her
