Its not all good or all bad.

They might be great for something like that. Just like you would research and ask a second opinion on what an MD prescribes, this is no different and you must consider the pros and cons of whatever treatment the ND suggests.

Would I ask for a second opinion on what a MD prescribes? Not usually, ever?

not talking about big stuff even-
Just this Friday we had a situation of my kid’s labs looking a bit whacked due to a virus. Local ped prescribed antibiotics. I sent it to my reg ped, ID & heme who said all markers that are elevated are viral related don’t give abx. Glad we didn’t bec fever went away and he started improving.

He did get steroids though for a flare up in his condition due to the virus but all 5 of his specialists conferred about it first.

I've never found reason to doubt the medical advice I've been provided.

I do read a lot.

what you described is using a team approach to medicine - that great. Second opinions are not that.

True, because that was for a short term course. If you have strep you’re not going to go see another 3 docs to confirm so. But when you're talking something big most go for a second opinion.

But, also my point was that some drs jump too fast to treat. And this dr just didn’t interpret the results well. It’s scary bec she’s a great doc and I really do trust her... so punchline- iis always great if you have another set of eyes to look things over for medical advice.

Yes - I disagreed with SB's blanket statement.

Sometimes it is a simple matter of asking the pharmacist if two medications can be taken together. Think about all those cases of strep that led to pregnancy because the antibiotics caused the BC pill to fail.

Okay - we have a different understanding of the phrase 'second opinion' when it comes to medical care.

Yeah, I should have been more clear.

I think that we see that a lot on imamother; that people want a different perspective on whatever their doctor suggests. There are often other or better approaches and sometimes this could involve some form of alternative medicine.
The Israeli medical insurance does cover some forms of alternative medicine but American insurance companies are concerned about the costs involved if there are higher medical costs down the road because someone initially gets ineffective care from an alternative medicine practitioner.

No worries. very interesting helpful info actually! (not going off topic I specifically meant it starting to look like all the other vax threads)
Do you have personal recommendations for a good ND? (don't want to disclose info here, but broadly speaking- within the tristate area)

Hi OP, here's a link for the NYANP Find an ND page: http://www.nyanp.org/find-a-na.....york/
Of the names listed for NYC area, the only ones I recognize are Peter Bongiorno and Erica Waters. And Steve Nenninger who focuses on colitis/GI issues. Oh also Ivy Branin, ND has opened up a practice in or near Crown Heights I think, and she's Jewish and becoming BT so that might be nice to have someone who 'speaks your language.' You'd have to google to find her new office info.
In New Jersey, there's Dr. Liat Kuzniar who is also frum, she's in Nutley. https://www.njanp.org/find-an-nd
Good luck! BTW so nice you found a pediatrician who is thorough and open-minded. Us too, B"H!

Look up a former ND, now scientist and blogger named Britt Hermes. She was a graduate of one of the seven colleges in the US that trains NDs.

Oh man PLEASE don't look up Britt Hermes. That's like saying you should look up BDS to get information about Zionism.
Britt went to one of the accredited ND med schools and for whatever reason became disgruntled and disillusioned. Maybe she wasn't smart enough to learn how to practice the medicine properly? Maybe she couldn't help her patients? Maybe she was (rightfully) ticked off at the accrued debt from grad school that is insanely hard to pay off in private practice especially when the business classes at ND schools are not adequate to teach how to run a small business? Who knows. But she now makes it her job to do smear campaigns against specific NDs to the extent that she has left the USA and lives in Europe (Germany I think) so that she cannot be easily prosecuted for defamation of character. I personally know 3 people that she tried unsuccessfully to get their licenses revoked by reporting them to their medical boards. All cases she has tried to bring have been dropped because they are false. It's shameful that she is trying to bring down an entire profession and undermine practitioners' parnassa and ability to help their patients all because of a personal vendetta. Of the tens of 1000's of graduates of naturopathic medical schools over the past 5 decades, surely there would be more outcry like Britt's if there was any credence to her accusations about that profession.
But anyway southernbubby I am really sorry about your DC and the platelet issue with cat's claw. Hope your DC is ok now.
