Does anyone have a recommendation for a good endocrinologist I can trust? I don't mind traveling but preferably less than an hour from Toms River/ Lakewood.
I am currently taking synthroid as prescribed by my general doctor (in Brooklyn, whom I still see periodically). I've been on thyroid meds for about 10 years now.
My numbers now are to the higher end of the normal range. We are ttc and I feel that it needs to be on the lower end of the normal range.
My general doctor thinks I'm fine.
I'd really like to get a second opinion from an endocrinologist specializing in this.
We just moved so I am completely unfamiliar with NJ doctors.
Can anyone please give me recommendations?

I use Dr. Lubitz at Robert Wood Johnson. She’s excellent. Been using her for about six years now. Got recommended to her by ECHO and I’m very happy.
As an aside, for TTC your TSH numbers should be under 2.
Sounds like your dr is not up on the latest research.

Thank you slategray I will look into her.
Anyone else used Dr. Lubitz and was happy?

My TSH is 3.89
T4 total 10.1
T3 uptake 26
Free T4 2.6

There's a poster here that's pretty knowledgeable with thyroid numbers. Is it Pinkfridge? Can you weigh in on these numbers?

Is there anyone a little closer to Toms River that's just as good?

I went to Dr. Lubitz and felt she was a total waste of time. I like Dr. Kenneth Kronhaus in Brick for my thyroid issues.

Thank you. Do you mind being a little specific what you didn't like about Dr. Lubitz and what you did like about Dr. Kronhaus?
Dr. Kronhaus is waaay closer to me so if he's good I would use him.

I don't see anywhere on google that Dr. Kronhaus is an endocrinologist, is he?

I’m the poster who uses Dr. Lubitz.
I’m curious what you didn’t like about her and why you thought she was a waste of time.
I have Hashimotos and she’s held my hand through a couple of pregnancies plus a number of losses, when each time my thyroid went crazy (fast-slow-fast-slow, etc.)
She helped me with my gestational diabetes, and now is managing my pre-diabetes.
Also I’m going through a different endocrine crisis currently and she is bing EXTREMELY helpful.
She gave me her email address and generally answers within a couple of hours.
I know sometimes she’ll sort of let the patient take the lead, which some may not go for , although I’m very happy and it works for me.
But she’s very knowledgeable and knows a ton...she just also listens very carefully to the patient.
I’ve been through tons of doctors, let me tell you.
I have two friends who also use Dr. Lubitz - one with hyperthyroid and one with cancer who had her thyroid removed. I think they’re both happy.

Dh uses Dr. Sudha Ganne of Prime Endocronology isn West Long Branch. She used to be part of RWJ but recently opened her own practice. She is very good, and since she just went out on her own it's not too hard to get an appointment (unlike the other endo's in the area!) It is about a half hour from Lakewood.

She is very sweet and I did find her very responsive. I do believe that she would be great for treating diabetic issues, seems like it was her specialty or something. Every time I went she was checking me for signs of diabetes, even though I did not come with any concerns related to diabetes.

I do not have Hashimoto's, I have hypothyroidism. I did not find that she treated me based on my symptoms. As long as my numbers were within range, she thought I was fine. I was still symptomatic. My TSH was fine, and my Free T4 and Free T3 were within range. However, they were just in the range, which turns out was making me feel so sick all the time.

I went to Dr. Kronhaus, and he really listened to my concerns. He switched me from Synthroid to another medicine that works well for people who don't effectively metabolize Synthroid. I felt a noticeable difference within a few days and my labs improved too.

I am the kind of patient who is fully informed and I appreciate when doctors really listen to me and follow my lead. Personally, I did not find Dr. Lubitz to be this way.

New poster here. I have an 18 year old daughter who has Hashimotos and I'm wondering/considering when I should switch her to an adult endocrinologist. She's been seeing a pediatric since she was diagnosed 3 years ago. I'm not so so so happy with him because he tends to treat her based on numbers, and she's always very tired and also cold, and I know that can be symptoms. She was doing better symptomatically when she was on a hire dose of synthroid, and he lowered the dose because he said her TSH went too low (it was 2. something) and on the lower dose she's at 4.6 or so which is more of a pediatric range...and I wonder if she should switch.

I can't tell you if she should switch or not, but most likely by 18, she should be going according to adult ranges, ideally her TSH should be below 2. It's really important that each time labs are drawn, Free T3, Free T4, and Reverse T3 are checked, in addition to TSH and thyroid antibodies.

I can't recommend a local endocrinologist, but after I had surgery 8+ years ago, my endocrinologist in NYC told me to have my OB-GYN monitor it. He adjusts my meds when the numbers are off and checks more frequently when ttc over the years. If you don't want a specialist- definitely speak to an OBGYN over a general practitioner.

I googled him and it seems he's a regular family MD, not an endocrinologist? I didn't know a reg doctor would manage these issues.

I went with DD to her pediatric endo yesterday. Last time he had lowered her synthroid because he thought her TSH ranges were too low as mentioned before (even though they would've been normal for an adult, because he looks at pediatric ranges), we retested and now her TSH was 10.9. No wonder she is feeling so zonked and cold. So now he upped the synthroid once again. Hopefully she will soon feel better.

I really want to switch her to an adult endo but not sure I feel comfortable having this handled by a non-endo. However, I'm also looking to switch her from her pediatrician, since she's outgrowing that too....so considering what to do. Do I take her to Dr. Lubitz, and also go to Dr. Kronhaus as a regular doctor as he seems to be knowledgeable about thyroid issues?

Thanks everyone here for your input.

I ended up making an appointment with Dr. Ganne as she is closer and I did not have to wait for an appointment. Online reviews for Dr. Lubitz said the wait is a few months.

I don't know if I'm that good. I also don't know know hypo so well. And, it helps to know the ranges for the last 3 tests. I can say that you want a doctor who will not go by TSH alone, and who will test T3 as well as T4.
Do you have copies of all your labs? Does the doctor consistently do the same forms of T3 and T4 testing? Do you know where your numbers are when you're feeling good?
