We live in a duplex with a small backyard. Dh wants to keep the garbage next to our succa. I think we should put it in the driveway next to our windows or on the curb. Wwyd?

What's the difference between all these spots you mentioned?
Why can't you keep it in the sukka?

If the garbage smells. And would make meals and hanging out unpleasant. I'd move it as far away as I could

As it is we have our recycling near it but it doesn't smell

That's close to the halacha.

Orach Chaim 629:14 says that it's forbidden to use schach that smells bad

The Mishneh Berurah there says that if one did so, the sukkah is kosher unless the odor is intolerable.

In 630:1 the Rema says not to make the walls out of something that smells bad.

And in 640.4 it says not to build a sukkah in a place with a bad odor, but if the bad odor comes about later one is exempt from using it (except on the first night).

So one shouldn't build a sukkah with something that smells bad or near that, but it's not assur to *be* near a bad smell while in a sukkah. Even if one wrongly built a sukkah that was invalid (or it became so later) due to odor, it would be permitted to go (or stay) in there. Why would one want to do that? Well maybe the bad odor is caused by something in the sukkah and if you go in there and take it out or clean it the sukkah will become usable. Or you're already there and something happens that makes it smell bad, clean it up like you would if you were inside.

I would keep it away from the sukkah for the reasons mentioned also it can attract animals and pests.
