I was looking for a ring for a birthday. Went to a well-known, upmarket store. Found something attractive, not overly expensive, and decided to buy. The 18K gold surface was very scratched on the one we tried on, so I asked for a new one. They said they only had one in the store and it would be polished. Would that have been OK?

Have it polished and see if it looks good to you.

As long as the stone wasn't damaged, why not?

Ring was just gold. The gold was extensively scratched.

My close relative owns a jewelry storeand I work there.

All jewelry stores sell their "samples", just like clothing stores sell what someone else had tried on.

When the ring will be polished, the scratch will be removed, it will be sanitized and brand new.

Of course but it!

Good idea, but they said no, it's their standard policy not to buy in a lot of gold rings. I also asked if they could order a new one in, and they said no.

Have them polish it first before deciding to buy

All jewelry in a store are floor samples.

I don't think jewelry stores have floor samples. Too expensive to do that.
I would ask them to polish it first so I can determine if it looks good.

Exactly. No different than with a sheitel that You would have them wash and air dry before you buy.

Yes. It wouldn't make sense to maintain an inventory of relatively expensive products as to which there isn't a huge turnover.

Let them polish the ring. If you're happy, buy it. If not, move on.

OK, they said they would polish it. Thanks to all.

(BUT - I've now read that polishing, especially professional polishing, removes a layer of the gold, albeit a very thin one, and should therefore be done as little as possible.)

Are you hard on your rings? If so, remember that the higher the carat, the softer the gold.

If you're going to be doing a lot of stuff with your hands, be sure to take your ring off first. (for example, gardening will ruin rings)

Polishing a ring properly by a reputable jeweler will make it look brand new.

If its white gold they will re rhodium it.

Nothing wrong with it totally normal.

Brand new rings on display can get scratched from being taken in and out of the safe every day for example.

If you love it buy it and wear it with good mazal Smile
