Genuinely curious why it would actually need a hechsher?

You wouldn't wana find treif ingredients in cleaning agents used on food surfaces if you're keeping a kosher kitchen!

Ok but oven cleaner is soooo toxic, it doesn't remotely resemble food. So how can it be treif?

St Moritz works very well and has a hechsher but please please be very careful when using it and don't keep it in the house. Get rid of it when you are done. These things are very dangerous.

By definition, poison doesn't require a hechsher. People who demand one, out of ignorance, drive up costs for all kosher consumers.

Your first sentence is accurate, the bolded not so much (as per my kashrus professional DH, national brands such as Easy Off is not any more expensive for the Kosher consumer due to its hechsher. The Jewish brands are inherently more expensive because they're targeting a smaller audience.)
By its nature oven cleaner is a davar pogum (unpalatable, foul taste) and therefore doesn't need a hechsher. (and for the amother concerned about the surfaces of her kosher kitchen, I would strongly advise washing off any surfaces that were sprayed with the cleaner for safety [not kashrus] sake.)

Right. But the people who demand a hechsher will want a Jewish brand (because it has to be a heimish hechsher, of course), and all of a sudden, the Jewish brand oven cleaner will become a requirement for a kosher family. That drives up expenses, because chalila that you should use the national brand.
It's a little bit like the clothing situation being discussed on other threads. When you pretend that there's a religious value in dressing formally, people who buy into the system think they have to buy more expensive clothes.

I asked this shaila to a well known respected Posek. Not a thing. Poison cleaners doesn't need a hechsher.
