I remember my husband's grandmother served regular braided challah for the day meal but made a different type of challah specifically for Friday night. IIRC it was an unbraided loaf with a braid over the top, or something similar.

Does anyone do this and know the significance of it?

Given the lack of responses, maybe it was just your Bubby’s “thing” and has no significance except to her.

If I’m not mistaken, the braid on the challah represents a vuv. Two vuvs are for the yud bais lechem haponim.

Yes I do this, it looks like a football. I make it with just a strand across, not braid.
Also a reason many braid specifically 6 braids each, I believe.
So now I'm not sure why the football shape one Friday night and braided one by day.
All I can say is minhag... Very Happy

My grandmother did it. We loved getting the thin braid from the middle. No clue why only Fri nights.

My mom makes them like that to. I would say it's minhag.
