All famous and successful people failed many times or were told they weren’t good enough. Those people didn’t allow others to define them. They continued to persevere and they failed a few times before making it to the top. Keep at it and don’t give up no matter how critical they are of you OP! You are a great writer and you have touched our hearts. In my opinion that is proof you have done a great job!

I wrote a little something I want to share as my DD approaches the “terrible twos” stage. As a little background, I had a very rough pregnancy with this one and a lot of issues both with me and her. Based on her diagnoses, we were told not to expect too much from her if she makes it. She’s a complete miracle. But really, the following can apply to any parent. Hope you enjoy!!

FOR THIS, I PRAYED (a terrible twos poem)

They say it is a stage,
That passes with the age,
That it’s a two year olds right
As she giggles with delight
Cuz this once angelic daughter
Poured a cup of her bath water
All over me.

I hug her with affection
And I have a recollection
That for this, I prayed

They say it is a phase
But my eyes begin to glaze
When this trouble-making child
Gets a little bit too wild
And jumps around the cart
In the local store or mart
And I try to put a stop
But it’s getting hard to shop
Cuz although she’s very teeny
She’s a miniature Houdini.
And I can’t keep up.

It’s a personal reminder
That I really shouldn’t mind her,
Because for this, I prayed.

They say it passes by
In the swift blink of an eye
But this little one’s quite clever
And each day feels like forever
With the crayon on the walls
And the never ending falls
And the third dinner I’ve cooked
Finds its way to every nook
And when nighttime comes around
She just doesn’t settle down
Till the wee hours.

As she starts to relax
And I’m ready to collapse
I say, “for this, I prayed.”

They say it gets much better
But my two year old trendsetter
Decides she wants to wear
Clips and headbands in her hair
And the red pants and pink sweater
I debate if I should let her
It’s the height of current style
And I can’t help but smile
At her opinions.

And she looks like a clown
As we walk around the town
But for this, I prayed

When her face and hands are sticky
When the floor becomes quite icky
And she gets in the way
Of her bigger sisters play
And I try to settle fights
And she looks a sorry sight
When she removes her bib
And climbs out of her crib
When she dances through the heap
Of the stuff I tried to sweep
When her bowl becomes a crown
And I feel like I might drown
From exhaustion.

When she runs away while dressing
I marvel at my blessing
Because for this, I prayed.

Though my little daughters actions
Can serve as a distraction
And sometimes I forget
But I try hard to reset
And I thank the One Above
For this child that I love.
Infinitely.

After all, for this, I prayed.

I hugged you - it’s a real hug, with no sinister intentions. You deserve it. Have a wonderful Yom Tov and enjoy the not so terrible twos!

Wow!! This poem really is incredible!! I want it printed on my fridge so that every time my crazy wild boys make me want to collapse, yell, and give up, I’ll remember the horrendous HG pregnancies that I went through for them!

My 2 yr old is my first and only, born when I was forty. To say she was long awaited is an understatement. She is BH energetic and active and keeps me on my toes. I cry with joy every day when I look at her. This poem nails it on the head. I am so grateful for her.

Thank you so much OP. A timely reminder.
And it is a beautifully constructed and worded poem.

I agree with all the others. Not only a sweet poem, but extremely well crafted, and I'm a very picky reader.

I was blessed to adopt DD when I was 38 years old. She's 16 now, but your poem brought back so many memories so vividly. In 16 years she's sent me on quite a rollercoaster, but I am still so very grateful for every day. I wouldn't trade her for the world.

Great poem, just what I needed. Actually I hissed at my children just a few moments ago "you are embarassing me!!!" - I'm in a hospital, ivf department waiting room right now, and dh came by uninvitedly with our 3 kids. They started yelling and running up and down the department and wouldn't stop or listen. One of them almost unhinged the automatic door. And that in front of all the other ivf patients. I hope no one took offense. At the same time I'm sorry I called my kids an embarrassment. After all, yes, for this I prayed and underwent a lot of treatments.

Wonderful! It's beautifully written!

Every night, I sing for my daughters (3 and 1) to sleep, HaMalach HaGohel for them and El Hanaar Hazeh Hitpalalti for me, to remind me the same exact thing as you!

If some of you don't know that song you have to check it out, it's a gorgeous song:

Can I forward to friends? Do you want me to put your initials or name or pen name?

I think it's pretty neutral, even though it mentions "prayer" op I think you can try to submit it to both jewish and non jewish magazines, parenting websites... let us know when you get published Smile
