depends if your flying local. I went to israel with a 2, 5, and 8 year old. for the 2 year old I recommend a car seat as they sit and sleep better in it.
Traveling out of the country so we needed passports for all.
Not sure about domestic travel though

For domestic travel they need just birth cert. And they dont need car seat. In fact the 2 yr old can probably sit on your lap & pay a cheaper fare

No birth certificate or id for domestic unless they are under two to prove they are eligible to be a lap child. Two and over must buy a seat and it’s safest for them to be in a car seat.

Has to be original. In fact it is illegal to photocopy a birth cert AFAIK

I was actually looking this up... I went on Jetblue's website and it said this
Children
Children under the age of 18 and traveling on a domestic flight do not need to show identification or documentation unless they are under 14 days old (physician’s letter required) or are traveling as a lap child (proof of age may be required).
Infants/lap child
Customers traveling with an infant as a lap child will be asked for proof of age, such as a passport, birth certificate (photo or digital copies are acceptable for domestic travel) or an immunization record.
Infants between three and 14 days old must also have, in the form of a letter, their doctor's approval to travel.

We only needed ID when our kids were lap children. When they had tickets we didn't need any ID. We always brought carseats with us. Even though it was a pain the kids sat so much better in their car seats on the plane than in a regular seat. And if we didn't bring them we would need to arrange a car seat on the other end which was very difficult in some instances. It was easier to bring.

I would take 2yo car seat- its safer and more comfortable for ur kid in the plane and aren't you going to need it when using car at ur destination anyway?
If u have a very heavy one, maybe borrow a lighter one from someone for ur trip or buy a cheap one like cosco seneca
