Do you have a hot water tank?

We recently moved home and the hot water in this house is heated in a tank. Previously we had a combi boiler and always had hot water on demand. Now, I need to set the controls according to our needs but I often forget and then find it annoying to have to turn on the hot water and wait for it to heat up before I can have a shower.

I understand that the water in the tank retains heat for a while so I'm wondering if it's more cost effective to have it go on just once in the middle of the day and hot water should then remain hot for the rest of the day?

Once my son had a shower when the controls were off since the morning. I remembered while he was in the shower and expected him to complain of cold water but when he came out he said it was perfectly hot. Scratching Head

Is your hot water tank constantly set to 'on'? Just one or two hours per day? Or as needed?

I'm find it really confusing and would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

I set mine to come on earlyin the morning and again in the late afternoon and we always have enough hot water with a household of 7 people showering at various times morning and evening. I dont need to leave it on all day.
