My DC is turning 3. Over a year ago I took her to a GI with stomach bloating, constipation, terrible gas. We have celiac in the family and I wanted to make sure she was tested. The GI told us that she doesnt have allergies bh but that she has a pretty severe case of constipation. He gave me a diet to follow. No dairy, low carb. High fiber and protein. My life was turned upside down trying to keep a 20 month old on this diet. I was cooking special for her, trying to make her food as appetizing as possible and she was refusing to eat most of what I made her. It was a big cause of stress for 4-5 weeks. I was venting to my mom who told me to take her to the pediatrician and tell him whats going on. The pediatrician told me to return to her old diet and give her a dose of miralax daily. It was a huge relief. Peace was restored in the house! But now it's been a year of her on miralax. We cant even skip a day or shes backed up. Id love to know how and when were going to get out of the viscous cycle! She eats yogurt for breakfast, a sandwhich for lunch, and the family dinners which are a protein starch and veggie. Shes not great about the veggies at dinner but she does eat fruit. Bananas, grapes, etc. Yes I realize all the foods I just listed arent helping her stomach but shes happy and eating relatively balanced meals and I dont have it in me to fight more than that!

Ive got a toddler like that. He gets senna daily, but we still need to help out with foods to help him go.
Best foods that get him moving are ripe pears, peaches (we give the canned peaches and fruit cups in their own juice), and prunes.

Was she feeling better when she was on the diet? If yes, I would try to incorporate as many of those things in her reg. diet.
High fiber, fruits and veggies.
You can get mini packs of prunes. My kids love love them as a snack and they really help.

My kids are on mirilax for years. And one son drinks a cup of pear juice daily as recommended by the gi specialist I took him too. Yeah he also rec the low carb, tons of fruits and veggies but ds is a super picky eater, it wouldn’t work. Lives on bread, pasta and pizza. Once they get older and learn to go more frequently to the bathroom independently we gradually reduce the mirilax

When I was having issues with my toddlers (2 boys 18 months apart) I was not impressed with the GI solutions of Miralax, Exlax etc, and they were picky enough eaters I didn't/couldn't mess with their diet. And they ate plenty of fruits and vegetables and were only eating whole wheat bread at the time. I discovered Constipation Ease by Mommy's bliss and it made a WORLD of difference. No more medicine, no more explosive #2s in their diapers, no more cranky toddlers from the cramps. I had happy, toilet trained toddlers within 6 months. I put the dose in their milk and they drank it no problem. It took a while before I weaned them off entirely--mostly out of caution, but right now they are on no laxatives and go regularly.

Maybe instead of regular yogurt, give her Activia yogurt (I dunno if it's kosher, ive just seen the ads/commercials. So if it's not then try to get a kosher version).
Instead of regular sandwich, try high fiber bread.
Give lots of fruit for snack.
Prune juice in her sippy cup instead of orange juice.

FYI, my GI said senna can really break down the walls of the colon. He’s a surgeon and he can tell which patients take it. I stopped immediately...
My daughter was on exlax- it’s a piece of chocolate for a long time, finally cleared her out and moved onto a fiber powder that has been working.. with a very constipated child you will need kore than a change of diet...

We had a very similar situation and were finally able to get off daily miralax by taking my child off all dairy.

I wouldnt want my child (esp such a young one) on medication U never know the ramifications of. Medication esp long term is never good for anyone. I use a natural thing called "constipation care" it's also a colon cleanser, it cleans out the entire inner system without harmful medicine. U can use it daily. It really helps, I use it any time my kids (or myself) dont feel well also, it washes out all germs and bacteria that r trying to leave the body through strep, cold, flu etc.... my daughter stopped having step symptoms in 1 day and just a few doses.

My daughter has struggled with constipation for years. I give her a fiber supplement as needed and that helps keep her regular, but I notice her hydration level also has a lot to do with it. This may seem obvious but just in case it isn't, make sure your child is drinking plenty of water. And by plenty I mean LOTS. She also eats a lot of granola and apples so that natural fiber helps as well.

My daughter was so constipated when she was very small that she developed a condition where she vomited with alarming frequency and all kinds of other unpleasant stuff. We had to give her normalax for a long while but we also learned tons about what works food-wise and honestly the information has been invaluable for others in the family, too.
This isn't just anecdotal mom stuff, either, it was working with the pediatric gastroenterologists at Hadassah Ein Karem. We did start by changing everything about her diet but that didn't work for us either because it just wasn't sustainable long-term.
So what eventually worked for us b"H was along these lines. Melon or watermelon for breakfast as often as feasible. Salad for lunch. At least start lunch with a big salad or put a large side salad with it. Dinner whatever everyone else is having, but make sure to include a veggie. If she has a banana or apple try to give her a non-constipating fruit or two that same day. If she'll tolerate it, whole-grain bread instead of white. And she should have a water bottle with her all the time. They're not such hard changes to make, healthy for everyone, and if you all make the changes instead of just her being on a special diet it'll be easier for her, too.

This sounds like a motility issue. You need to address this at the root.

If you’re not already, you should ask your pediatrician if taking a probiotic may help.
