I just got DH this sweater. We like it, but if it shrinks, which is very possible because its made of cotton, it will be too small.
Otoh, we both hate clothing thats too big.
Would you buy the one that fits or the next size which will be way too big (unless it shrinks after washing)?

I would buy the one that fits. It's an outer sweater, so doesn't need to get washed often. When you do washit, follow instructions to minimize shrinking.

Buy what fits and air dry it flat, no dryer.
