I have 90lbs to lose and my blood pressure is getting quite high. Due to a variety of factors, diet plus exercise is not cutting it.

I have Medicaid & live in Brooklyn.

1) Whars the best option for me doc wise?

2) tell me everything to ask and everything to know about the process

3) How much do you typically lose and how soon?

I did the band and love the fact that unlike the sleeve it’s adjustable like if you get pregnant or want to eat a lot on vacation!
I see so many people start regaining the weight after 5 years and then there’s nothing to do. The band can be tightened.
Speak to people who have done it more than 5 years ago.
Please post your experience if you did your band or sleeve more than 5 years ago

Someone dear to me did the sleeve approx 2 yrs ago. Hes doing very very welll.
But important to know that it really is due to the effort he's putting in. Hes going for therapy. And Eating disorder groups. And has a personal trainer.
It's multifaceted hard work. And so worth it when done right.

A means to a goal.
Good luck with your decision!

NYU has a free information session every month, where they discuss the different procedures and take questions.

most doctors require you to sit through a seminar before scheduling your first appointment. That will give you tons of info.
I did it 6 months ago and couldn't be happier BH!! Lost over 80 pounds with another 40-50 to go, hopefully! I feel great, physically and emotionally.
I don't live in NY, but I know there is a Dr. Schwek in NYU that has a great track record.
I wish I knew how to get onto the private chat here-I tried twice and got no response.

I did it with Dr Schwack at NYU through medicaid over 5 years ago. I had a good experience with him but I am over 5 years out and am regaining weight and loosing teeth and developed gallstones so I have to have my gallbladder removed. I do not have the same energy I have when I first had surgery-- I could walk for hours back then but now I get exhausted easily. Dr. Schwack wants me to take appetite suppressants and still considers it a success but I am not so sure about it. I would think twice before doing this surgery and I don't think I would have done it had I known that this would happen. The honeymoon is over for me and I am not sure that I am better off today than I was 6 years ago. Good luck!

I did the gastric sleeve seven years ago. Lost 80 lbs. Have maintained the loss since then, including through three pregnancies.
I am very disciplined with my food. In the back of my mind, the specter of regaining the weight haunts me.

Had to jump through many hoops for pre op, because had to be cleared by a whole slew of specialists- psychologist, cardiologist, etc, that I am fit to undergo procedure. Recovery took time, physically and emotionally.

Best thing I ever did for my health, my self-esteem, and my future.

I didn’t do surgery but I was very seriously considering it about 2 yrs ago.
I Bh was able to lose over 60 lbs with diet & exercise.
What I’ve seen & heard is people who view surgery as a cure aren’t successful either short term or long term. People who view it as tool to help them loose & maintain are successful.
You still have to do the “work” of loosing & maintenance but you have “help”
Good luck

I also tried to join the group and haven’t gotten a response. Is it not active anymore? Are there any WhatsApp or Facebook group for lap band?

I did the gastric bypass / RNY about six months ago. I lost 94 lbs so far and need to lose 40 more lbs to get to my goal weight. It’s a much bigger (more effective) surgery but in terms of recovery it’s pretty much the same. I got discharged from the hospital a day after surgery and was back that night for excessive vomiting. Needed 3 days on IV before even getting down ice chips. It is NOT a cure, it is a tool. You still need to be disciplined otherwise it won’t work. If you are committed to changing your lifestyle, you will see results. I work out twice a day (morning and night) I won’t go to sleep unless I’ve worked out. I’m very careful with what I eat and I see a nutritionist once a week. I am worried about pregnancy but with my excess weight I couldn’t even GET pregnant. At this point, I’m thrilled that I did it.

Everyone I know who did the band has awful day to day things to deal with (constant vomiting, etc) and most gained the weight back...

If he was doing all the above BEFORE he did the sleeve, he wouldn’t have needed the sleeve!

Was recovery very painful? I’ve heard some woke up from the surgery and felt like they were dying from the pain...
