Hi All! Does anyone know if Rav Moshe Feinstien conversed in English? It came up as part of a discussion at our Shabbos table and I was just wondering.

I don't know. I know my parents went to see him, but they spoke Yiddish.
But please, please, give Rav Moshe the honor of spelling his name correctly: Rav Moshe Feinstein.

He may have understood some basic English but he certainly didn't converse in it.
My father who learned by him for a few years when he getting Semicah says that a major reason people say over incorrect things in Rav Moshe's name is becuase they didn't speak Yiddish well enough to communicate with and understand him correctly.
He remembers occasions people who weren't fluent in Yiddish were asked "What did Rav Moshe just tell you?" and gave an incorrect answer becuase they didn't understand him.

He moved to the Lower east side when he was 41 years old and lived there for 50 years, so I assume he could have conversed in English. But obviously was more comfortable with Yiddish
