What do I do to get speech therapy for a 13 year old boy?
A doctor?

He speaks too quickly
he gets frustrated when stressed and can't articulate what he wants to say

That sounds like classic ADD tbh. Not speech issue.

OK so what do you suggest?
He still needs speech therapy to help him, no?
ADHD meds won't do it?

Honestly I'd take him to psychiatrist, someone who is very experienced with ADD. They'd probably give him meds and should get better pretty quick. If it's as I suspect, no speech therapy needed.

I speak from experience, this is how I was before meds. My brother had a hand signal growing up telling me to slow down and stop talking so fast. Always had trouble getting thoughts to mouth when flustered despite being a very articulate person.

could be a speech issue, I have son in speech therapy because he clutters his words, meaning because he thinks fast he talks fast, and doesn't always say the words very clearly. and if asked too many times to repeat he gets frustrated. I am seeing Rueven Porges in Chestnut Ridge, just started so can't report yet on progress. my son is 11yrs old.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question

Can I just call a speech therapist and pay through insurance like I would for a doctor?

by the way, he is on vyvanse

If you have non referral insurance then yes
Insurance has to approve the diagnoses. You may have a hard time with that but it’s worth a try

(Personally I think it’s good to check out speech before add. This could easily be a language or tongue placement issue. Rather first do a speech assessment and if not then go deeper).
