General Practitioner. As in "regular doctor or pediatrician."
There can be many causes for hoarse voice, ranging from non-issues to serious.
One common cause is reflux. (DH had periodic hoarse voice from reflux, he got a wedge cushion for his bed and now rarely has issues anymore.)

My DS had a hoarse voice. I read an article in Mishpacha at the time which mentioned there could be small cysts on his vocal chords. He would tire easily learning out loud.
I went to see an ENT who specialises in voice training as well. Lo & behold he had cysts which required surgery & he did get voice training as well.
This is 17 years ago now & his voice is great & he doesn’t tire from learning.
Get it checked out.

I know someone (an adult) who had a constantly hoarse voice, and she had a few sessions of speech therapy to teach her to speak from her stomach and not from her throat, something along those lines.

My son had that for months. No other symptoms. Had his tonsils cultured. It was strep. He got abx. Hoarseness continued. He got retested was negative. Then I discovered he had tooth abscess. Got his bad tooth out and hoarseness resolved. It might be infection. Might be stress. So many things.

I am a speech therapist with both personal and professional experience with voice disorders. I think you should see an ENT, preferably one who specializes in voice disorders. If you live near NYC, I can list some names.

This same thing happened when my son was 13 1/2. We all had a cold around the same time, but his hoarse, raspy voice continued way past everyone else. Then we realized his voice was changing. My FIL is an ENT and he gave him some voice and breathing exercises to do so he'd sound less raspy and learn to talk with his changing voice. It really helped! He just turned 15, and it's no longer raspy, just still getting deeper!

GI had her on meds for a few years. ENT did follow ups with the nose camera to see if the reflux was still eating away at the voicebox or if meds were helping.

Dr. Lucian Sulica
Dr. Peak Woo
Grabscheid Voice and Swallowing Center at NY Eye and Ear Infirmary
These are all in Manhattan. If you want one in Brooklyn, Dr. Simon Friedman is excellent. He doesn't specialize only in voice like the other ones, but he is very good at diagnosing voice disorders.

My son is hoarse att. We had him checked by an ent consultant. He has nodules (what a poster above called cysts) on his vocal chords, it comes from speaking incorrectly. Here in the UK, they don't usually operate because it will just come back. He now goes for speech therapy to learn how to talk properly.
Read up about vocal nodules online.

There’s a difference between nodules and cysts. I have a son with nodules and another one with a cyst. Nodules happen from abusing the vocal cords some way or another, they can go away with proper treatment, cysts on the other hand are usually congenital and can be managed but don’t go away themselves.

I didn't realise they were different things. Thanks for the explanation.
