Our toaster oven had a small fire while baking homemade pizza.
It was unplugged and kept closed and fire died down eventually.
Is it still useable or does it need to be trashed?

If it was just the food that burned, no prob. But the flames may have damaged the wiring or its insulation, making the unit both a fire and electrocution hazard. No way to know for sure without looking at its innards. The trouble with many small appliances is that you can’t look at their guts without breaking the housing, which kills the appliance.

If the interior looks ok with no scorch marks, chances are it’s fine. If the walls look burnt and it’s not just food residue, take no chances. Cut off the plug and put the item in recycling.

You could contact the manufacturer & explain what happened. You never know, but they may replace the toaster oven for free. Also, you could contact the retailer where you bought it from, they may possibly help you out with a refund/replacement. And if you bought the toaster oven under a credit card, there may be an extended warranty that will apply.
