I brought mine a jewellery box and a book.
The jewellery box to accomodate the necklaces and so on that everyone would give her, and the book so that the focus would be a bit more serious than just looking pretty. I looked for one that she could read at twelve, but keep coming back to as she got older.

Please go for something she likes. Mine wouldn't know what to do with an overnight bag etc.
I also got bday presents I couldn't use, or that my parents had to remove, it's the worst with a preteen
