So I think my child is dyslexic. I have been teaching him to read because He was very behind in school. He is doing ok now BH. He is able to read books (first grade and early second grade level) however if in five him a simple standalone word he has a hard time decoding it. Words like pat, cake, bad, rat etc..Its easier for him to read words in a story bec he decides them. The more letters sometimes the easier it is for him to read it...pictures give it context. The words before and after help him out...

Question is what can I do to help him. What tools are available? He is not getting any services at this time in school. He is in third grade.

Find a reading specialist to assess why he is having difficulty. He is not necessarily dyslexic. It could be he is impulsive and/or was not taught well how to decode words phonetically. Once you find out why his reading is poor you can decide how to proceed.

I'd say get him proper help asap. even if it's a minor learning disability.
Having worked in a school system, I noticed that kids who don't keep up with their classmates, the gap continues to grow till a point where it's already too hard to fix...
might just be a simple prob but should be properly adressed! the sooner the better.

Try to find someone who is Orton Gillingham certified. (Their method is the gold standard for teaching reading to those with dyslexia.)

I am a Wilson certified reading specialist and the program I use is geared specifically towards those with dyslexia .
1. The longer you wait , the harder it will be for him to follow along in a classroom since the other kids are progressing while your child is not . Get help ASAP . I’ve had kids in grade 4+ Who didn’t come to me until then and they were still reading on a first grade level . Reading is the basis for everything . Without it they will fall behind in all other areas . So again , don’t wait to get help .
2. He’s memorizing words . He needs to develop phonemic awareness and not know words because he simply memorized them. It’s like making a building without a foundation . With the Program I use we use nonsense words as well to make sure the student can decode the words and is not just ‘recognizing’ them.
Good luck OP. With help , your child can reach grade level in reading .

Until you find a reading specialist work on word families
Also, a great reading series is Primary Phonics reading books.
Start with set 1, if he can’t master it and move on to set 2 there is set 1a.
I think they have a set 2a.

What Cobalt said.

OP, I was you 4 years ago when ds was in 3rd grade. I think I even started a thread here asking for advice. That year, we got ds a Wilson certified tutor a few times a week. He is now bh a fluent reader and is an absolute bookworm. He constantly goes to the library to take out books, and his reading and comprehension are on grade level as per the standard testing. The books he likes to read are above grade level.

It can be done, but your ds has to first learn the basics of phonics, which Wilson will teach.

Get him consistent help for a few years until he is caught up. Rest of school years will go fine once you do that. Watch for signs in any younger siblings pre reading. If you suspect, let them learn to read before school teaches it in a dyslexia based program. Avoid the school issues altogether.

I did read Write program phonics. He knows it one day, doesn't know it the next. He also has ADHD. What does the Wilson program offer? Can I do it myself?

Today I showed him a bunch of similar letters p, d, t, b, e etc..a few of each. He was able to circle the ps. Then I wrote all the vowels and asked him to find the A's. He did. Then I wrote pat. He read it.

I'm not familiar with Write program phonics, but you need a program that's been subjected to research and found to be effective. Wilson is. What you described that he's able to do--he should be doing in pre1a. That's not 3rd grade level. You can interview a Wilson tutor and ask questions if you're unsure, but I'd strongly suggest that route. Good luck.

Have you discussed it with the school? They might have good tutors on board that can work with him or recommendations

Sorry it is Read right and three volumes. They use it in school. I just opened it and it says it is rooted in Orton Gillingham. My sister works in special ed resource room and they use this. I can call. Can't afford a tutor so really want resources to teach him on my own.
