My teenage dd is super into Jewish history. I was hoping to find a DVD by someone like Rabbi Dr. Ken Spiro or an authority on Judaism. Not a PBS special plz

Anybody know if this exists?

There is an animated video called "lights" that tells the story of chanukah really well. You can probably find it on YouTube.

Note that both of those (Maccabees and Lights) are fantastic videos, but are not heavy on the history.

Lights has gorgeous and deep symbolism

Shazak is really juvenile but all accurate.
I would not recommend rugrats!

I opened the thread to suggest that same video! My husband has watched it every year since he was like 15 and now we show it to our kids every year Smile

Ken spiro's books. But they are hard to get through. So I figured I'd make it more accessible via video. A friend suggested getting her the artscroll meam loez, but when I went through it, while she would love the navi'im, the stories were so graphic and inappropriate in a way that she would have more questions than answers.

We have this :
The Miracles of Chanukah DVD

https://www.israelbookshop.com......html

I've only listened to it - I don't know the quality of the video. But it seemed true to the actual history.

Not sure if he's done any on ancient times, but Rabbi Berel Wein has produced some excellent DVDs on Jewish history. Sounds like your daughter would find them interesting.

Ken Spiro does have some DVDs. But I've never watched any (just read his books) so I don't know if that would fit what you are looking for. I'm not sure if they are documentary type or just taped lectures.

I'm surprised op, Ken spiro book on history is way lighter and more enjoyable to read than anything by berel wein.

This book is amazing. Like a novel and full of details. Do some googling bc I bought on used book site
https://www.amazon.com/Through.....11110

He has other books. He's like Yosef deutsch. Both great series.

(I also love the Big Midrash says on Chumash and the new Navi Journeys. And a few random single titles like Gilded Cage on Esther and Akiba by Marcus Lehman. Sorry getting carried away off topic here)

Oh, I'm a huge Ken Spiro fan. I've read all his books and have listened to many of his lectures online. But I don't know if I'd have appreciated his books as a teenager, tbh.

As far as Rabbi Wein, his movies that I watched were documentaries and very well done. Very moving and emotional but not in an over the top, sentimental way. Informative but not heavy.. Easy watching for teens and up.

Theres an amazing timeline book called for ldor. We have the Yiddish version but comes in English. Not sure if its artscroll but if ur daughter is into history, it might be worth checking out because it's on sale this week. Theres also a dvd on the beis hamikdash that we recently got online from a monsey store

Dor Ldor by Ephraim Waxman
Its a visual timeline so the pages pull out and you see every single thing overlapping with each other.

Codex Judaica is a little different. Its like "on this day in history"
