This might be more of a vent than a question, but why are contact lenses still considered a "luxury" in the world of vision insurance. My vision insurance will cover either a pair of glasses or $120 worth of contact lenses. I've tried going back to my glasses, but its just NOT a mehalech. I don't see well or function well when wearing my glasses. $120 covers just over 3 months worth of lenses (I have bad astigmatism so I need special for astigmatism) if worn according to changing them every 2 weeks. I'm guilty that I stretch them a bit longer than that b/c mostly I lose track of when I change them, but I haven't had any complications wearing them longer, but what choice do I have?

This is why I don't have vision insurance. I also have more expensive prescription and I would have to pay over what the insurance allows plus the premium. That is more than what I have to pay just for the glasses out of pocket. I don't wear lenses. But $120 would not cover my glasses prescription.

This is why we don't pay for vision insurance. If insurance costs you $12 or more a month ($120 annually), and all you get out of it each year is $120, then it's just not worthwhile.

It's economics. In my experience vision insurance only covers up to a certain amount for glasses anyway so the end result is the insurance company will cover the same whichever you choose.

The only time I had vision insurance was when it was free through a corporate employer. Otherwise it makes more sense to self insure

We have a family plan through my employer that is worth it for the 3 glasses wearers in my family--its like $5/month for 3 and that could grow at any time.

We have a vision plan. 5 people wear glasses. We did the math, its about $70 a pair, after copays. We found that we saved alot of money. The adults probably wouldn't have gotten a new pair every year, but my kids prescription usually changes. If it doesn't, having a spare pair comes very handy. Also out insurance fully covers the glasses for a full year.

Dh used to pay alot for his lenses, due to the high prescription. Now insurance covers it. Another dc has expensive lenses due to problems with his eyes. Insurance covers it, but we upgrade to Verilux as per his drs request. The insurance only covers 6 month of contact lenses for dd, but we were told she can wear the lenses for 4 weeks instead of 2 weeks.
