For a diagnosis, try Rebecca Soffer. She’s in the Yeled V’Yaldah building. She gave me a diagnosis and my son is doing well with ABA services. It’s just a label to help the kid.
I went to the NYU Child Study Center. Both my son’s school (who initially recommended them) and I were not satisfied there. I’d look elsewhere for a more comprehensive eval.
Good luck!

I wouldn’t recommend getting such a serious diagnosis from a school psychologist.

This is not the right circumstance to be cheap and try to save money.

I would recommend not getting a diagnosis from anyone other than a developmental pediatrician or a neuropsychologist -preferably from both.

In Lakewood, even if you have an ASD diagnosis, the local agencies don't accept JerseyCare. You would have to purchase private insurance. They would help you with that.

Can you elaborate more on this. What exactly is covered on private insurance in Lakewood regarding ASD.

I believe there are even schools in Lakewood who help arrange lots of related services and supports through private insurance. I don't know the details but can find out if need be.

I am an SLP in the tristate area and see many children with so called ‘diagnoses’ of autism.
Some children clearly ‘deserve’ the diagnosis, while others quite obviously have severe ADHD, NVLD, pragmatic language disorders, and/or other disorders.
While I understand that parents just want to help their children and a diagnosis of autism will open many doors and often pay for unlimited speech, OT, PT, social work, etc., not to mention countless hours of ABA (which is beneficial for many types of difficulties, not only autism), shopping for a diagnosis just in order to get more services is actually considered insurance fraud.
Unfortunately, some of the doctors who diagnose autism at the drop of a hat are being paid off by the ABA companies to do so (yes I know this as a fact).
Therefore, if you plan to see such a doctor and don’t fully trust that the diagnose you get is 100% valid, please ask your Rabbi if it’s okay if it may be considered insurance fraud.
Another point to note is that some insurance companies require a diagnosis from an MD in order to reimburse for services. This would then preclude a psychologist, therapist, etc. from being able to diagnose, unless your pediatrician or another doctor would give the diagnosis based on the others’ reports.
Further, some insurance companies have recently begun to require actual standardized testing, not just developmental checklists, to be used as proof of diagnosis. Check what is needed in your state and with your particular insurance.

Help!! I am looking to get more services for my son, and would like to get him a diagnosis of ASD in order to get more services. He has many of the symptioms, however he is very connected and seeks social interaction so it's like maybe more Asperger's? I don't know!! All I know is that I was told byy therapists that it won't be so easy to get him the diagnosis unless I go to the right person who will give it.... she told me that some nuerologists as know to give the diagnosis freely and that I should ask around but honestly I don't know where to ask? Anyone have any leads please?? Location is BP but willing to travel to Manhattan or downtown bklyn, also don't want to have to wait too long for an app because I want to start services asap!!

I don’t get it. I know you want services but either your son has some form of autism that would meet the DSM requirements and then ANY knowledgeable doctor would give him the diagnosis, or he doesn’t. If the diagnosis will be ‘hard to get’ and you need to look around for the right doctor because your son may not truly be autistic, you are (unwittingly) committing fraud.

Unfortunately in NYC to get services, you need diagnosis.
Even ADHD- it has proven that ABA can help that as well, but currently the BOE and insurance only cover ABA for ASD.
Similar symptoms can also be severe sensory processing issues.
Point is, the kid needs help and the mother is trying her best to get the kid the help he needs.
Labels mean little in life, it just helps create a plan for the kid.

No you are wrong. The ‘label’ means you are telling an insurance company that your child has a real diagnosis of autism so they’ll pay for services. If it’s not really true you are STEALING. It’s just like faking your income to get food stamps because you desperately need more money, when in fact you may not be eligible based on your income. It doesn’t matter if you need it. Stealing is stealing.

I refer a lot of clients to Dr. Ditza Berger and Dr. Malky Zacarowitz in the five towns.

They will provide a very thorough, comprehensive evaluation including standardized testing. They will work with your kid's school, and give very detailed, targeted suggestions for interventions to help your kid. I've been so impressed with them.

They will not, however, give you the diagnosis you want for insurance purposes.

Dr. Harris Huberman.

To respond to the other posters looking to have someone give a dx in order to get services. If your child doesn’t legitimately have ASD, just realize once the dx is given it follows the child (who eventually becomes an adult ) around for the rest of their life.
Any time they see any doctor, specialist or medical provider , they’ll see that this person has ASD. Just something to keep in mind .

You can get a complete evaluation at CUNY Psychological Services. The truth is even if you suspect ASD it could be something else, which is why a complete evaluation with a Psychologist would be the best thing.
At CUNY they will do a variety of tests, including different IQ tests as well, and it's very interesting to see what comes up.
They have a sliding fee depending on your income.

If you are willing to pay out of pocket, Dr. Miriam Goldstein is great.
She does a thorough eval and writes up a really great report with very helpful recommendations.
