Is it appropriate/expected to tip the designated UPS driver?
The one delivering on my block does a great job. In the apartment buildings, he delivers packages to the door of the apartment.

FEDEDX leaves on the first floor.

Call up the company and ask. I believe they are not allowed to take tips.

I once had a postman who went above and beyond in helping me with my home based business. At one point I was shipping out over 100 boxes a day, and getting in at least 5 boxes of supplies. He always made sure I was home, and never left anything outside. I tried to give him a tip, and he wouldn't take it, even when I promised it would be our secret.

Our mailman puts in an envelope addressed to himself in all mailboxes. He's expecting us to mail him a tip.

UPS isn't supposed to take tips, but if you feel a driver really went above and beyond you can try offering one, or maybe just a hot coffee/ cold drink.
I believe the rule is set so they don't loiter and give preferential treatment.
On the other hand, USPS workers regularly accept little gifts around the holiday times.

Growing up the UPS drivers got tips and/or gifts. I know municipal workers can't accept gifts but I remember the UPS driver's face light up.

I don't tip UPS/Amazon drivers.

I do, however, save the packaged not kosher holiday food that comes in the mail from our investment firm, and leave it with a warm note for the mailman.

I'm really surprised to hear of mailmen leaving envelopes. Federal regulations are clear. Gifts of under $20, yes, if you like. Cash, checks, or gift cards that can be cashed, absolutely no.
