They came feeling very soft. Now they’re really stiff and not comfortable:( what did I do wrong and how do I make them soft again?

Are they 100% cotton? Have you used fabric softener when washing them?

Wash just linen in the laundry cycle, with warm water liquid detergent and just a bit of fabric softener, and then dry fully in the dryer.

Did you put in the dryer? That should make it soft again

Not OP, but what about people who don't have a dryer?

Many people in Israel live without a dryer.

Those who don't have a dryer use a bit more fabric softener and get used to having stiff sheets initially that soften with use.

If you have an outdoor laundry line the wind usually makes clothes even softer than a dryer

Add white vinegar to the final rinse to remove the detergent residue that make fabrics feel stiff and look grey. Line-dried items will always be crisper than machine-dried. The healthiest option is to learn to like crisp sheets. Fabric softener is little better than poison and reduces the absorbency of fabrics. Absorbency is one reason you buy cotton instead of cheaping out with synthetics, and using fabric softener effectively knocks out the absorbency for which you just paid a premium.
