Yang the Youngest and his terrible ear.
Cutest book.
It's not as sophisticated as Harry Potter but still really good. There are 4 books in the yang series.

Disclaimer look up the ages, I always read years above my age
I have to go anon bc any of my sisters would recognize me lol
Guardians of Gahoole
Animorphs (this rlly grows with the kid like by the end of the series there's a love interest)
Artemis Fowl
Boys Against Girls - oh man this is hilarious. Idk if you want him reading some of it like the one about valentines day or something
Jewish - I think any of the Avner Gold or Marcus Lehman are classics. Really not up to date on the novels otherwise. In 5th grade though I was reading the huge novels like Gordian Knot

Hank Zipzer
The Lemonade Wars (there was one book I didn't let DS read)
The Who Is series (I read through reviews on Amazon to see which ones I let him read)
ETA: DS enjoyed these in 5th grade but his reading level is not advanced at all, so may be a little young for what you're looking for. Still great books though

I second Avner Gold's Ruach Ami series.
Hardy Boys
Gordon Korman (you need to be selective)
Avi (definitely need to be selective)
I Survived
Ten True Facts

A very good book is the pushcart war. The level would be just right. Another good one is the circle maker (not about honi). You can also look at Yitzchak be strong.
Keep him reading!
