I just redt a shidduch, a hardworking young lady who's very machshiv Torah & plans to help support a husband who's learning long term then going into chinuch.

The boy's mother questions if that can be done on the salary of a secretary, as they had in mind someone with a Masters.

I don't think the pay is all that different, of course yes you can make more with a degree (once you've paid off your loans etc.)

Can anyone here chime in with relative pay scales? Thanks!

I don't think anyone can definitively answer that question for this particular young woman without a crystal ball.

I think therapists have more part-time options eventually and to have an equivalent office salary you will need to put in more hours on a more full-time basis. But there are many exceptions to every rule. Generally, tho, people with more education get paid more.

I think its important to know how industrious she is, if she wants very much to support her family, and the support system she will have.

But, tbh, if the boy's mom is looking for a girl with a master's, just let her find someone who will appreciate her for who she is and what she can contribute. Otherwise, she'll be writing in here about her idiot MIL who's so nasty because she can't afford a designer gown for the next Simcha, y'know?

I'm just telling the mother that though it's true you can find a girl with a degree and tremendous chashivus haTorah, you should consider that a really industrious, hard-working girl who's machshiv Torah can be worth more than a degree.

Therapists can make $60-80 an hour but they might have to travel a bit out of Lakewood. Usually they’re 1099 so they’ll pay more in benefits but you can’t compare those salaries to office jobs. Of course there are women who will earn more without degrees but I don’t think the mother is being unreasonable.
