I teach upper elementary, which has a few different English teachers per class. I struggle so much with being able to settle the students down when I walk in to class. They have an extremely hard time transitioning between teachers. It could sometimes take up to 10 minutes til everyone is seated and ready to learn! Any tips/suggestions for what I can do to settle them any quicker?

Will they be cooperative enough to do a quick exercise thing by their desks?
Will it help to give them a timed break for 3 minutes, then shut the light and back to desks?
Maybe some kind of stress release?

Write a warm-up on the board as soon as you walk in. This should be a 5-15 minute exercise which reviews something from the previous lesson, introduces your new material, or provides enrichment. Explain to the students that every lesson will start this way, so they don't need to wait for your instructions, just look at the board as soon as they get to their desks and start completing the task. This allows students who are ready sooner to use their time for learning, and you will see that in and of itself, it will help you achieve quiet and focus much faster.

Thanks. I can try an excercise, maybe both physical and mental!
Still open to suggestions...
